460th Anniversary

This year marks the 460th anniversary of Sir Roger Cholmeley receiving the founding charter from Queen Elizabeth I. The Latin document required it to be a school ‘for the education, instruction of Boys and Youth in Grammar’.

A second charter, dated 6 April of the same year, added the names of six Governors and required them to draw up statutes and appoint a learned man to be its Master.

Take a closer look and zoom in on the large E at the top of the document to see an etching of Queen Elizabeth I.  Or contact the archive to see it in the flesh archives@highgateschool.org.uk
