Yesterday, Charlie Noble (EG 2014), Matilda Crawley nee Mills (SH 2016), and Nick Friend (MG 2013) were on a Year 11 Careers Panel at School. The topic of the panel was “My first steps after school and how I made my choices”.
Charlie shared how he had taken A levels to go into engineering and had a job in engineering before switching to what he is now, a Manager at Deloitte specialising in Financial Crime. He talked about in his engineering job, he realized he only liked the problem solving aspect and now his job is mainly problem solving for his clients.
Matilda spoke about how after School, she continued to sing in her university's Choir and even though she did not have a lot of job experience, she believes that doing extra curriculars helped her get her first job. She is An Associate at a Global Communications and Public Affairs Consultancy.
Nick, a Cricket Journalist, talked about how he knew while in School he wanted to be a journalist but did not take courses in university about journalism. He figured that if he studied journalism, it would take away his passion for it and is glad he made the choice he did.
The overall message from all three speakers to the pupils was to make sure they study what they enjoy and to find a job that is fun to them. They also mentioned how people do not stay in the same job for their whole life, so it is normal for people to move jobs.
