Golf Season Ends on a High as Football Face Tough Defeats

OC Football

The past two weekends saw some tough matches for the OC Football 1’s and 2’s. On the 19th, the 1’s played Kimbolton in Dunn Cup with a 2-0 loss while the 2’s played Malburians in a Lauge Game with a 3-0 loss.

On the 25th, the 1’s played against Alleyns with a 5-1 loss and their goal scorer was Charlie Peters (WG 2018).

This upcoming weekend, both teams are hoping for better results in their away games with the 1’s playing Repton and the 2’s playing Berkhampstead.

Match v Old Paulines – Wednesday 15th October 2025 at Old Fold Manor Golf Club

Final fixture of the season.

We had to reduce the fixture to six a side this year, as the Old Paulines were unable to field a full team.

First match out was Mark Walton (FG 1971) and Ollie Bishop (SH 1995) against Chris Vallender and James Grant. Chris is very experienced, having played for the Middlesex County team. However, Mark was the star of the match, with the quality of his play evident from the get go, going one up after he started with a birdie. We quickly extended the lead going three up after 6 holes and it stayed this way up to the half way house. We then had a bad stretch losing three balls on the first three holes of the back nine and we were pegged back a bit. Mark stepped up again with another birdie, and we never looked back. The game was won 4&3.

In the second match Barclay Ivison (FG 1962) and Robert Phillips (SH 1966) took on the Pauline captain, Brian, and an ex-Hewitt player Alan. Alan began very strongly with a par at the first and a birdie at the second to go 1 up. Despite good play from Barclay, we could not stop the Paulines from going 2 up through 6. After a slow start, Robert started playing better and the 7th and 8th holes were both halved with well-played pars. With Barclay and Robert now both playing strongly the OC’s forged a two-hole lead after Robert holed a long putt to win the par five 13th hole. Now behind, the other Pauline, Captain Brian swung into action and hit some great shots to win both 16th and 17th with two pars. In the end the match was halved.

Peter Ambrose (FG 1979) and David Monkman (NG 1976) were in the anchor match and played their usual steady golf but both their opponents were in receipt of a large number of shots. The OCs were 2 down after nine holes and battled on resolutely only to succumb 1 down.

The match was thus halved overall and the OCs having won in 2024 retained the Highgate Salver. This was the 20th match since the fixture was resumed as part of the OC centenary celebrations. Highgate have recorded 10 wins, with 4 halved matches and 5 losses over that period. The fixture was first played in 1935.
