OC Golf

Match v Old Merchant Taylors – Thursday 24th July 2025 at South Herts Golf Club

Despite the hot and dry summer, the fine rain on arrival was appreciated by the course, if not the players. Warmups were short and things were bleak on the first tee, but fortunately mid-way through the front 9 the rain stopped, and we remained dry albeit still quite grey. First off for the OCs was Gerald Wingrove (NG 1967) and Simon Allard (SG 1968). It was a scrappy match, not helped by the fact they had more of the rain since they went out first. It all came down to taking the opportunities on the greens which Highgate did not do. We were down throughout the game, allowing the Old Merchant Taylors (OMTs) to prevail without too much stress. Next out was James Lloyd-Davies (NG 1975) and Martin Pyrke (GH 1967) getting off to a terrible start, 3 down through 5 holes. They fought back to all square after 10, but then dropped back again soon after. We were never up in the match but managed to recover again and ended with a halved match. Third pair for the OCs was Clive Evans (CH 1963) and Gordon Tindale (FG 1951) taking on OMTs match organiser Andy Farr and a newbie to OMT golf on their side. A dominant performance from the OCs here, we were up early reaching 2 up after 6. By the time they got to the 12th tee we were 5 up, from where we coasted into a solid 5&4 win. Playing in the last group, was Anuj Anand (HG 1986) & Mitch Pinder (MG 2011) taking on Kevin Quinn and Brent Richardson. One hole each for the first 5, including a gimme birdie for Mitch on the 4th. We then lost the 6th and 7th to allow them to open a gap at 2 up. We managed to close it to one, but then long time Hewitt player Kevin, now off an eight handicap went 2 under gross for the next 4 holes to end all hopes. Alas a loss on this occasion.
