OC Sports Update wc 11 August

OC Netball

The OC Netball team had another great match against Birds of Play on the 12th! With the win, 38-14, the OCs are headed to the semi-final on the 19th of August. Both Juliette De Freitas Vile (HG 2018) and Lizzie Mills (SG 2021) were players of the match.

Good luck in the semi-finals!

OC Golf

Match v Highgate Golf Club (HGC) – Sunday 10th August 2025 at Highgate Golf Club

We were playing Greensomes format with first pair for the OCs Anuj Anand (HG 1986) and Andrew Waters (EG 2018). Things did not start well when the HGC pair made a birdie on the first with Stuart Drysdale hitting the approach and HGC Captain Jason Marcus converting. We recovered straight away to even up on the next and were 2 up after five, staying that way until the start of the back nine. HGC then fought back with a birdie on the 11th and also won the 14th and then the 16th thanks to an excellent up and down. However two pars each to finish ensured an honourable half.

The second match saw Peter Ambrose (FG 1974) and Graham Dunbar (MG 1970) taking on Mike Clack and last minute HGC replacement George Collee. Graham commented that it was a very enjoyable match played on pristine greens. The OCs started well and went two up early but the opposition used their four shots very well and they were 1 up entering the back 9. The OCs were unlucky on the par three 11th when the opposition ball clattered into the trees and somehow ended up on the green. The HGC pair held on to secure a 2&1 win on the 17th with another par.

In the middle match we had Todd Lindsay (teacher and honorary OC) partnering with David Rose (WG 2003) against Andrew Parkin and Peter Drummond who were getting 5 shots. Things were looking bad right from the start as the HGC pair birdied both the first and second to take a 2 up lead. We did well to ensure it never got worse over the front nine. We made 3 birdies of our own and were level par gross and 1 up after the 12th. However a poor last 5 holes including three sixes, with one coming on the last allowed the HGC pair to edge the match.

Our fourth pair was Simon Martin (honorary OC) and David Monkman (NG 1971), it was a tight and competitive match played to a good standard. We had a close front nine with no side being more than 1 up. The OCs managed to forge ahead on the back nine and were 2 up with 5 to play. We had a golden opportunity to seal the deal on the 17th hole with a short 4 foot putt but the chance was not taken, however we did prevail on the 18th for victory by 2 holes.

Out last was the young 20 year old Jack Willcox (SH 2023) playing with his father and adopted OC for the day, David Willcox. Playing against long standing HGC members David Kingsman and David Booth the HGC pair were out the gates like Usain Bolt, with near faultless approach shots, leading to a 7 up lead after 8 holes. The OC pair then stopped to rot to halve 9 and 10, and then we went on a run to win three in a row from the 11th to the 13th, only to lose the 14th which ended the contest early.

Well done again to Highgate Golf Club, a comfortable victory, albeit three matches went down the 18th.
