STEM Week

This week was STEM week and to celebrate, we would like to Highlight a few OCs in the STEM field!

We would like to congratulate Thalia Seale (FG 2018) for being an Accepted Author of the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI)!

The submission title she entered is 'Modelling Multi-Phase Cardiac Anatomy Using Point Cloud Variational Autoencoders'.

Thalia will be attending the event in Greece in the end of May.

Congratulations to Richard Durbin (HG 1973) who was awarded the International Prize for Biology in the field of "Biology of Genomes” in August 2023.

Richard has been the lead on many international research projects and has developed various innovative technologies in the field of genome biology. Not only that, in the span of over 30 years, Richard has played a leadership role in projects that have set milestones for the bioinformatics and genomics community.

Congratulations to Irene Meletopoulou (SG 2021) who’s group was awarded the Engineers In Business Fellowship award for Imperial College Business School’s ‘Entrepreneurship’ module.

Irene’s team created the idea of EcoSocket - a smart, remote-controlled electrical socket enabling home safety and energy saving.

Thank you to Jack Kreindler (SG 1987) who visited School yesterday to talk to pupils for STEM Week.

Diving into the projects he has worked on, Jack’s informative and comical presentation captivated the attention of the audience. A self-confessed Star Wars fanatic, Jack highlighted Darth Vader (pictured) as an example of the relationship between medicine and health.

Jack spoke about his most recent study: a 50-day group walking expedition to the South Pole. His research looked at physiological data surrounding heart rates, muscle density, calorific intake and deficits, and endurance comparisons

A potentially critical group of 17-year-olds were focused throughout, even prompting many positive and effusive comments!! Jack enjoyed his visit too, recounting happy memories of Szydlo leaving a crater on Junior Field, Weaver teaching with a squirrel in his lab coat pocket, and a 35-year itch about never getting the science prize!!

We look forward to seeing what our OCs in STEM do in the future!
