Andrew Trenaman (SH 1962) had died at age 74

On 10th January 2025, Andrew Keith Trenaman passed away after a prolonged illness.

Born in Jinga, Uganda, Andrew Trenaman joined Highgate School at the time that his parents were working for the Forestry department in Honiara, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. This meant that many of his school holidays were spent with Alfred and Daphne Doulton, the then headmaster and his wife,

Through this relationship he developed an acute understanding of how to navigate being a lively and, at times, mischievous member of the school whilst having a highly developed and respectful relationship with its headmaster and his family. This understanding of the boundaries between boisterous students and their teachers was a skill that he used later in life as a much loved and respected teacher.

At Highgate, Andrew was a sporting star, being awarded 1st X1 Football Colours and Captain of Athletics. He was also a fine swimmer. Simultaneously, his rise through the school led him to being Head of House and Head of School.

On leaving Highgate, he worked as a schoolmaster in Devon and latterly in King George V School in Hong Kong where he taught Design & Technology and Art.

Andrew was held in tremendous affection by his peers. He was a man with a ready smile and a deep love of pranks as his daughter, Chloe, said in the eulogy at his funeral:

“There are many tales about the pranks he has played over the years – the traps set, in staff rooms, on beaches – creepy crawlies or furry animals that he spent hours rigging up

using invisible string, water jets hidden in paintings, shark fins attached to his foot at a distance, so it looked like he was being chased. I can just see his face now, big smile, crinkled eyes, absolutely loving it!”

Mark Poulsom, current head teacher at King George V School writes that ‘Andy’s warmth, generosity and sense of humour have shone through as people have shared their memories of him. His work and passion for KGV has had a profound and lasting impact on the school’.

Andrew leaves two daughters Sophie and Chloe and five grandchildren. His wife Vicki predeceased him in 2015.
