At Highgate he boarded in The Lodge and played in the Fives VI. His National Service was as a 2nd Lieut in the Royal Engineers transferring to Royal Signals in Germany. He was a State Scholar and went to Wadham College, Oxford in 1956 graduating with a degree in Chemistry. He also flew Chipmunks in the University Air Squadron. While at Oxford he met Margaret Credland (Katie) and they married on 31st July 1965 with Bruce Bennett ( MG 1949) as best man.

His first job was with Fisons, travelling widely. He then joined Burroughs at the dawn of the new computer age. In 1977/8 he moved to Bruton, Somerset and took a year out to gain his teaching qualifications and taught chemistry at St. Mary’s Convent, Shaftesbury. While there he got all his students to pass “O” Level Chemistry. Despite having a full time teaching job he started growing Christmas Trees (with the help of his children).

St. Mary’s, Bruton has been at the centre of David’s and Katie’s lives. They helped start an ecumenical Sunday School. David served as Church Warden and learned to ring bells. He was honoured to ring for the King’s Coronation at his daughter’s tower in Walton-on-Thames.

David was a family man with 4 children and 5 grandchildren. He was so happy that he was able to celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in the home he loved surrounded by his family, who feel so blessed that they were all together on that day and could remain together around his bedside when he set off on his final journey.

Extracted from the Eulogy prepared by his children and read at his funeral service at St. Mary’s Church, Bruton on Friday 15th August 2025 [Bruce Bennett]
