Derek Hayes (FG 1945) has died at age 92

Derek Geoffrey Hayes died on 30 September 2024 at the age of 92 after a long and fulfilled life, most of which he spent as the owner and director of what was at the time, the largest independent wholesaler and tobacconist in London, Haylea.  He attended School from September 1945 until August 1950. After school Derek worked in the retail newsagent and confectionary shop of his mother, Ivy Hayes (nee Shadbolt) in Kings Cross until he joined the Army in the early 50s on national service. He was commissioned in the Royal Army Service Corps and served in the rank of lieutenant.  Most of his active service was spent in Vienna, a place that he always recalled very fondly and which had a major impact on his life.
