Balancing Medicine and Elite Sport
Kira Rothwell (GH 2019) is currently a Graduate Entry Medical Student at Queen Mary University of London, studying at Barts and The London School of Medicine. She has developed a strong interest in Trauma and Emergency Medicine, actively seeking shadowing and research opportunities to deepen her expertise.
Alongside her medical training, Kira balances a remarkable career as a professional netballer, representing England Netball at U17, U19, U21, and Senior levels, and playing professionally in the UK Superleague - most recently with the Birmingham Panthers. Her athletic journey has helped her hone essential skills including calmness under pressure, time management, and leadership.

Recent Highlight: Experiencing Robotic Surgery Firsthand
In a recent LinkedIn post, Kira shared her excitement after being given an incredible opportunity to try out a DaVinci surgical robot, during an event organised by the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She practised suturing techniques and bronchoscopy guidance, gaining hands‑on insight into cutting‑edge robotic surgery used across multiple specialties.
She also reflected on the decision‑making challenges surgeons face when choosing between laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and robotic approaches.
Kira described the experience as inspiring - a moment that strengthened her interest in surgical pathways and highlighted the value of emerging technologies in modern healthcare.
