Early Career Insights

Thank you to George Karageorgis (MG 2019) for a lively webinar packed with honest, practical early career and CV advice! The webinar consisted of OCs, LAET Alumni, and current Y13 pupils. As a Recruitment Consultant at Communicate Recruitment Solutions, George works with a large number of companies across multiple industries.

George encouraged uni students to start building experience early through internships, spring weeks and volunteering, and to show real enthusiasm for the companies they apply to. He reminded everyone that even things like attending talks and podcasts can show genuine curiosity and should be added to your CV. His biggest message: the earlier you get involved, the easier everything becomes.

George also shared tips from reviewing up to 100 CVs a day: keep it short, focused and tailored, and don’t worry about fancy designs. Use key job‑description words, add a brief summary in the email body and make sure your experience is up to date. For those interested in finance, Excel skills are a must, and even a few weeks in the summer can be used to learn something new. He also highlighted degree apprenticeships as a great fast-track into work.

To round off, George encouraged everyone to make the most of LinkedIn: set up a strong profile, use a professional photo and connect widely using the OC and LAET networks. He also suggested using sites like Glassdoor and conversations with connections to understand company culture. Spring weeks and internships are a great way to test whether a workplace feels like the right fit.

As someone who loves to network and help those in his network, George encourages OCs to connect with him on LinkedIn
