Lucy Holland (SH 2019) Publishes First-Author Research
Lucy Holland (SH 2019)
Lucy, a Conservation Ecologist at the Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, has published her first first-author scientific paper.
Lucy’s work focuses on the reintroduction of European bison to the Romanian Carpathian Mountains - an important conservation initiative for this keystone species. Using GPS collar data from six bison in the Fagaras Mountains, her research explores how animals adapt in the early stages following release into a new environment.
The study identifies clear seasonal patterns in movement and habitat use, while also highlighting the animals’ flexibility as they acclimatise. These findings provide valuable insight into how reintroduced species establish themselves and make use of unfamiliar landscapes.
Lucy’s paper also offers practical guidance for future conservation projects, emphasising the importance of forest–meadow habitats, access to seasonal refuges, and varied landscapes that encourage natural exploratory behaviour.
