Adam Lopez (NG 1985) has died at age 52

Adam Lopez has passed away at the age of 52 on April 8, 2025 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in London, England on May 26, 1972 to parents Yusuf and Mirjiana, becoming their second child after the birth of his older Anisa.

He studied at The University of Manchester where he majored in political science and later pursued a masters in marketing research at the University of Glasgow. In 1997, he made the big move to Toronto, Canada which became his home for the rest of his life and where he fell in love with Maria Lopez a year later. They married in 2000 and had a daughter, Zoë, in 2002. He founded Toronto After Dark Film Festival shortly after and that became his passion. It was a place for horror and sci-fi lovers to gather every October. In 2021, he was diagnosed with stage four cancer but true to his nature, he did not give up and outlived his prognosis of “less than a year to live”. Although he lived a shorter life than his loved ones would have liked, he often would tell people that even if he dies tomorrow he lived more life than most do with more time. He was beloved by everyone he met: neighbours, film community members, tour guides, absolutely everyone.

A private service will be held on Tuesday, April 15th at 11 a.m. EST by invitation only. Anyone who wishes to watch the service can do so via Zoom, please follow this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89039240994
