Jon Michael Bard (WG 1957) has died at age 78

Jon was born in Belfast on 14 June 1945 to Major Charles Bard, posted as a war psychiatrist there, and his wife Miriam, a graduate in law from University College London, who worked for a company making aircraft for the war. She had joined him in Belfast after their marriage in London in 1944. They must have had great hopes for him as World War 2 drew to a close.

From Belfast, after the war and the setting up of the NHS, they had moved to 79 Church Street, Stoke Newington, where they set up a general medical practice on the ground and basement floors, and lived in the first and second floor flat.

When Jon was 7, they all moved to Woodside Avenue in the more prestigious Highgate N6 postcode.

Jon went to Highgate School, where he appeared to be a well rounded student, good at study and sport, and with many friends, if a little too inclined to reading books in his spare time. His brother, Laurence, remembers himself being a happy pre-teen allowed to consort and play table tennis with Jon and his teenage friends in their attic table tennis room, football in the drive and long garage of their house, and cricket in the back (until a cricket ball broke one of their windows). And listening to rock and roll music, and later on, modern jazz.
