From Classroom to Kiln: School’s Andrew Plaistowe on The Great Pottery Throwdown

Andrew Plaistowe, School English Teacher

Andrew Plaistowe, a well‑liked teacher by OCs from their time at School, recently brought his creativity to a national audience with his appearance on Channel 4’s much-loved reality series, The Great Pottery Throwdown. The programme remains available to watch on catch-up for those who may have missed it.

Andrew has been a passionate potter for almost two decades, working on his wheel at home in his garage to produce domestic stoneware for friends and family - and, more than usefully, keeping the English Department well supplied with handmade coffee mugs! It was his husband, Will, who encouraged him to audition for the show. Although initially hesitant, Andrew is unequivocal that taking part was an excellent decision.

Reflecting on the experience, Andrew said: “It was the most wonderfully creative and exciting experience, and I met an incredible group of likeminded people who will be friends for life. I’m hugely grateful to the school - particularly my English Department colleagues - for their support, and I hope my experience encourages others to pursue creative interests. Pottery has given me so much pleasure over the years, and this really was the cherry on the cake.”

Since appearing on the programme, Andrew has begun selling his work at ceramics markets and is currently leading a collaborative clay project involving the entire Year 7 cohort - passing on both skills and enthusiasm to the next generation.

OCs and friends of School can follow Andrew’s continuing pottery journey on Instagram @plaidough.
